In-Home Dog Sitting in Halifax & Dartmouth

Paws & Peace House Sitting — Their Home. Their Routine. Their Comfort.

Going away shouldn't mean your dog has to go away, too.

Paws & Peace House Sitting provides personalized dog care in the place your pup knows best—their own home.

Instead of adjusting to a kennel, boarding facility or unfamiliar house, your dog gets to sleep in their own bed, eat in their usual spot, walk familiar routes and maintain as much of their everyday routine as possible while you're away.

For easygoing pups, spicy dogs and everyone in between, in-home care offers a more familiar way to spend time apart. Spicy Paws provides in-home dog sitting throughout select areas of Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Home Is More Than an Address

Your dog's home is filled with familiar things. Their bed. Their smells. Their neighbourhood.

The window they monitor with the dedication of a full-time security guard.

The exact spot on the couch they have somehow decided belongs exclusively to them.

When their people go away, enough is already changing.

Paws & Peace is designed to minimize the amount that has to change with it.

Rather than relocating your dog to an unfamiliar environment, I come to them.

They stay home while I step into their routine.

Why Choose In-Home Dog Sitting?

A Great Option for Spicy Dogs

For some reactive, nervous or sensitive dogs, traditional boarding can introduce a lot of change all at once.

A different environment.

Different smells.

Unfamiliar people.

Dogs nearby.

New sounds.

A completely different routine.

That doesn't mean boarding facilities are inherently bad—it simply means they're not the best environment for every dog.

Paws & Peace provides another option.

Your dog can remain in their familiar environment while receiving care tailored around their individual needs.

We'll discuss triggers, boundaries, handling, equipment, routines and established management strategies before I stay with your dog.

Some dogs may require additional introductions or trial visits before we're ready for an overnight stay.

That's okay.

Trust doesn't have to happen on a deadline.

What Does Paws & Peace Include?

House sitting is tailored around the care plan established before your booking.

Depending on your dog's needs, care may include:

  • Overnight care in your home

  • Meals and fresh water

  • Bathroom breaks

  • Private walks

  • Outdoor time

  • Play and enrichment

  • Companionship

  • Medication according to established instructions, where appropriate

  • Maintaining familiar cues and routines

  • Morning and bedtime routines

  • Individualized care for reactive, nervous or sensitive dogs

  • Pet-related tidying

  • Regular updates while you're away

  • Care for other household pets where agreed upon in advance

  • A reassuring presence in your home

Before booking, we'll make sure we understand what a normal day looks like for your dog so expectations are clear on both sides.

What Does an Overnight Stay Look Like?

Every household has a different routine.

Some dogs are ready for breakfast the moment someone's eyes open.

Some consider mornings an unnecessary interruption to sleeping.

Some need a good walk before settling into the evening.

Others are perfectly content with a shorter outing followed by quality couch time.

Rather than imposing one schedule on every dog, we'll establish a care plan based on your dog's usual routine and individual needs.

That includes discussing meals, bathroom breaks, exercise, walks, medication, sleep arrangements and how your dog typically spends their day.

House Sitting Does Not Mean 24/7 Constant Care

This is an important distinction.

Paws & Peace provides in-home and overnight care, but standard house sitting does not mean I remain physically inside your home 24 hours a day.

I may need to leave during the booking to provide services to other Spicy Paws clients, attend to personal responsibilities or complete other normal daily activities.

Before your booking, we'll discuss:

  • How long your dog is normally comfortable being alone

  • Their bathroom schedule

  • Medication or other time-sensitive requirements

  • Separation-related concerns

  • How frequently they require care

  • Any periods when they cannot safely be left alone

Your dog's established ability to spend time alone is important when determining whether standard Paws & Peace House Sitting is appropriate for them.

If your dog requires continuous supervision or cannot safely be left alone for the periods required by my schedule, please disclose this when inquiring so we can determine whether their needs can be accommodated.

Walks & Adventures While You're Away

Being home doesn't mean your dog has to spend the entire booking on the couch.

Unless their care plan says otherwise, appropriate exercise and outdoor time can be incorporated into their stay.

Depending on the dog, that might mean familiar neighbourhood walks, sniffy outings, backyard time or other agreed-upon activities.

Dogs will not be permitted to greet unfamiliar dogs while on leash during walks.

I don't allow on-leash interactions with unfamiliar dogs because they can contribute to tension or barrier frustration, and the behaviour of an unfamiliar dog is an unnecessary variable that cannot be reliably predicted.

Instead, I'll create space, cross the street, change direction or allow another dog to pass whenever reasonably possible.

For dogs who need more than their usual neighbourhood outing, we can also discuss whether a Mossy Paw Private Adventure can be incorporated into their care.

Keeping Your Dog's Training Familiar

I'm not coming into your home to introduce a completely different set of expectations.

During onboarding, we'll discuss the routines and cues you've already established with your dog.

That may include:

  • Door manners

  • Feeding routines

  • Walking cues

  • Leash handling

  • Crate routines

  • Place or settling cues

  • Recall

  • Reinforcement

  • Equipment

  • Management around known triggers

  • Household boundaries

Where reasonably possible, I'll maintain consistency with your established routine.

If you're working with a professional trainer, you're welcome to share relevant information about the plan you're currently following.

Spicy Paws provides pet care rather than professional behaviour modification or veterinary behavioural treatment.

Muzzles Welcome Here

Spicy Paws is proudly muzzle-positive.

If your dog uses an appropriately fitted muzzle as part of their established routine or management plan, that does not automatically exclude them from house-sitting services.

We'll discuss when and why your dog wears their muzzle, how they're accustomed to putting it on and any relevant handling considerations during onboarding.

Muzzles can be responsible management and safety tools.

There's no shame in using one.

Getting Comfortable Before You Go

Imagine meeting someone once and then discovering they're moving into your house for a few days.

Some dogs would immediately think:

Excellent. New best friend.

Others would have several questions.

For that reason, dogs who are nervous around unfamiliar people or who take longer to build relationships may need more than one introduction before an overnight booking.

Depending on the dog, I may recommend:

  • Additional meet & greets

  • A private walk together

  • Drop-in visits

  • A trial period

  • A shorter practice stay before an extended booking

These aren't hoops your dog has to jump through to "pass."

They're opportunities to build familiarity before you're no longer there to help with the transition.

For spicy dogs in particular, I'd rather invest time in building a relationship than rush the process.

Updates While You're Away

Leaving your dog behind can be hard—even when you know they're comfortable at home.

You'll receive updates during your booking so you can see how your dog is doing.

Expect glimpses of walks, naps, meals, adventures and whatever other important business your dog gets up to while you're gone.

The goal is for you to enjoy your time away without wondering whether your dog is okay.

Multi-Pet Households

Have more than one dog?

Cats in the household too?

Tell me about the whole crew.

Where appropriate, Paws & Peace may include care for multiple pets within the same household.

We'll discuss each animal individually during onboarding, including:

  • Feeding

  • Relationships between household pets

  • Sleeping arrangements

  • Walking requirements

  • Medication

  • Litter box care

  • Resource guarding or separation requirements

  • Individual routines

  • Behavioural considerations

The number of pets and complexity of care may affect pricing or whether the requested service can be safely provided.

Your Home Matters, Too

You're trusting me with more than your dog.

You're trusting me with your home.

Before your first booking, we'll discuss practical household information such as access, security, alarms where applicable, areas that are off-limits, waste disposal and other information necessary to provide your pet's care.

I will treat your home respectfully and use only the areas necessary for the agreed-upon stay and pet care.

Pet-related spaces used during the booking will be kept reasonably tidy, and I'll make sure your home is secured according to the instructions you've provided whenever I leave.

Before Your First Paws & Peace Booking

Every new Spicy Paws client begins with a complimentary meet & greet.

For house-sitting clients, we'll go through your dog's routine and the practical details of caring for them in their own home.

We'll discuss things such as:

  • Feeding and water

  • Walks and exercise

  • Bathroom schedule

  • Medication

  • Behaviour and triggers

  • Training and established cues

  • Walking equipment

  • Muzzle use where applicable

  • Sleeping arrangements

  • Crate routines where applicable

  • How long your dog can comfortably be alone

  • Separation-related concerns

  • Household pets

  • Home access

  • Veterinary information

  • Emergency contacts

  • What to do if travel plans change

Additional introductions or trial services may be required before an overnight booking depending on your dog's individual needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Does In-Home House Sitting Cost More Than Drop-In Visits?

House sitting reserves considerably more of my time and availability than an individual drop-in appointment.

You're not simply booking a series of brief visits.

You're booking overnight care, an ongoing presence in your home, individualized attention to your dog's routine, walks and daily needs, and the responsibility of caring for both your pet and home over an extended period.

House-sitting bookings can also limit the number and location of other clients I'm able to serve while your stay is underway.

The price reflects that commitment.

For pets who don't require overnight companionship, scheduled Cat & Canine Comforts Drop-In Visits may be a more appropriate and economical option.

There's No Place Like Home

You get to take your trip.

Your dog gets to stay where they know every smell, every sound and exactly which part of the couch provides the best afternoon nap.

Their routine stays familiar.

Their bed stays theirs.

Their neighbourhood stays the same.

And while their favourite person may be away for a little while, they'll have someone there to make sure they're cared for until you come home.

Their home. Their routine. Their comfort.

For the sweet, the spicy & everything in between.
