Small Group Dog Adventures in Halifax & Dartmouth
Kindred Spirits — Small Packs. Big Adventures.
Kindred Spirits Small Group Adventures bring together carefully selected dogs for trail time, sniffing, movement and outdoor enrichment—without the size and intensity of a traditional large pack walk.
Groups are intentionally kept small, typically around 4–5 dogs, so that I can get to know each dog, pay attention to group dynamics and create a more personalized experience.
Spicy Paws offers small group dog adventures for suitable dogs throughout select areas of Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Not Just a Pack. The Right Pack.
Putting several dogs together doesn't automatically make them friends. Dogs have personalities, preferences, play styles, boundaries and varying comfort levels—just like we do.
That's why Kindred Spirits isn't about placing whichever dogs happen to be booked that day into the same group.
I want to build compatible groups.
When considering a dog for small group adventures, I'll look at factors such as their:
Personality
Social preferences
Play and interaction style
Energy level
Walking style
Size where relevant to compatibility
Comfort around other dogs
Triggers
Recall
Handling needs
Transportation comfort
Existing training
Overall group suitability
The goal isn't simply to create a group. It's to create a group that makes sense.
Why Keep Groups Small?
There's a reason I don't want Kindred Spirits to become a giant pack of dogs. With a smaller group, I can pay closer attention to the individual dogs within it.
I can notice who needs a little extra space. Who wants to explore. Who is becoming overwhelmed.
Smaller groups can also mean:
More Individual Attention
Even though this is a group service, I still want to know the dogs I'm handling.
More Thoughtful Pairings
Dogs can be grouped based on compatibility rather than simply availability.
Less Intensity
For some dogs, a smaller group can feel considerably different from a large pack environment.
Easier Management
Fewer dogs allow for more thoughtful management of movement, interactions and unexpected situations on the trail.
A More Personal Adventure
Kindred Spirits is intended to feel like a few compatible adventure buddies heading into the woods—not a crowd.
The Kindred Spirits Difference
Traditional pack walking can be an excellent option for dogs who thrive in larger social groups.
Kindred Spirits intentionally uses a different model.
Rather than maximizing the number of dogs on each outing, Spicy Paws keeps groups limited to approximately 4–5 dogs.
What Does a Small Group Adventure Look Like?
The experience begins with pickup. Although my car may be small, I have the ability to separate dogs into three spaces. Including the seat behind the drivers is completely enclosed if your dog doesn’t like other dogs in the car.
Once our Kindred Spirits are together, we'll head to an appropriate trail or natural area for their adventure.
The outing is about more than walking in a straight line.
Depending on the group and environment, dogs may have opportunities for:
Trail exploration
Sniffing
Movement and exercise
Outdoor enrichment
Practicing familiar cues
Exploring natural environments
Appropriate social time with compatible dogs
Taking in new sights, scents and surroundings
Adventure locations may vary based on weather, season, trail conditions, expected traffic and the needs of the dogs participating that day.
Reactive Doesn't Always Mean Antisocial
This distinction is especially important at Spicy Paws.
A dog can be reactive and still have dog friends.
Some dogs struggle when they see unfamiliar dogs while restrained on leash but are comfortable once they have established relationships with compatible dogs. Others are selective about who they enjoy spending time with.
And some dogs genuinely prefer having the trail to themselves.
The label reactive alone doesn't tell me which dog I'm looking at.
That's why reactive dogs aren't automatically excluded from consideration for Kindred Spirits.
Instead, I'll look at the individual dog—their triggers, behaviour, social preferences, ability to recover, handling needs and comfort around other dogs.
If I believe your dog could safely enjoy a carefully matched group, we can explore that possibility. If they're happier adventuring solo, that's completely okay too.

No Forced Friendships
Kindred Spirits provides an opportunity to adventure alongside compatible dogs.
It is not a service designed to force dogs to socialize.
Your dog doesn't need to play constantly.
They don't need to interact with every member of the group every minute.
Healthy social experiences can include simply moving, sniffing and exploring alongside familiar companions.
Sometimes the best dog friendships involve doing their own thing together.
What About Unfamiliar Dogs on the Trail?
Dogs participating in Kindred Spirits will not be permitted to greet unfamiliar dogs we encounter while on leash or off-leash.
The dogs within a Kindred Spirits group have been intentionally selected and are known to Spicy Paws.
A dog approaching us on the trail has not.
We don't know that dog's behaviour, social preferences, health, training, comfort level or how they may respond to several dogs.
Introducing that unpredictable variable isn't worth the potential risk.
When reasonably possible, I'll create additional space, step aside, change direction or allow other trail users and their dogs to pass. Along with this, I carry enough slip leads for every dog I am walking to safely secure them while another dog or human may be passing by.
Being part of a social group does not mean your dog needs to interact with every dog they see.
Off Leash or Long Line?
Group adventure does not automatically mean every dog will be off leash.
Safety comes first.
Equipment and freedom will depend on factors such as:
Recall
Individual behaviour
Group dynamics
Established training
Environment
Wildlife
Trail conditions
Other trail users
Safety
A dog who isn't appropriate for complete off-leash freedom may still be able to participate using suitable equipment where it can be done safely.
The goal isn't to remove every leash.
It's to provide an enriching and enjoyable adventure.
How Do Dogs Join Kindred Spirits?
Because this is a compatibility-based service, dogs don't simply book themselves into an available group.
-
Every new Spicy Paws client begins with a complimentary meet & greet.
I'll learn about your dog's personality, routine, training, behaviour, social preferences, triggers and previous experiences with other dogs.
-
Step 2 — Get to Know Your Dog
Depending on your dog's history and personality, I may recommend beginning with a Happy Wags Private Walk or Mossy Paw Private Adventure.
This gives me an opportunity to build a relationship with your dog and see how they respond outside the home before introducing the additional variables of a group
-
I'll consider whether I currently have dogs who may be appropriate companions for your dog.
This means joining Kindred Spirits may depend on more than simply having an open space.
An available spot isn't necessarily the right spot.
-
Where appropriate, introductions or smaller trial outings may be used before your dog joins a complete group.
This could look like inviting you and your dog out to join a small group adventure with a pack. It could also look like your dog meeting my dog, Pico who can be spicy, but still social. All of Picos introductions are completed with him muzzled for safety.
-
Once we've found an appropriate fit, your dog can begin adventuring with their Kindred Spirits.
What If My Dog Isn't Suitable for a Group?
That's okay.
Being unsuitable for Kindred Spirits does not mean your dog has failed anything. Some dogs simply thrive with individualized care.
Mossy Paw Private Adventures offer many of the same opportunities to explore trails, sniff and enjoy the outdoors—without requiring your dog to navigate a group environment.
Your dog still gets the adventure.
They just get the trail all to themselves.

Muzzles Welcome
Spicy Paws is proudly muzzle-positive.
Wearing a muzzle does not automatically exclude a dog from consideration for Kindred Spirits.
A properly fitted muzzle can be a responsible safety and management tool and does not, by itself, tell us whether a dog is comfortable around other dogs.
However, just like every other dog, a muzzled dog's suitability for group adventures will be assessed individually.
We'll discuss why your dog wears their muzzle, their comfort around other dogs, established routines and any relevant handling considerations.
Frequently Asked Questions

The exact number may vary depending on the dogs, group dynamics and other factors affecting the outing.
-
No. Kindred Spirits is a compatibility-based service.
Dogs are considered individually based on their behaviour, social preferences, handling needs, transportation suitability and overall comfort within a group environment.
-
Potentially, yes.
Reactivity does not automatically mean a dog is antisocial or unsuitable for carefully selected canine companions.
Reactive dogs are considered individually based on their particular triggers, behaviour, social preferences and handling needs.
-
Dogs will not be permitted to greet unfamiliar dogs while on leash or off-leash during Spicy Paws services.
Kindred Spirits gives your dog the opportunity to spend time with known, intentionally selected companions rather than requiring interaction with dogs we happen to encounter.
-
Not necessarily.
Recall is one of several factors considered when determining how a dog can safely participate and what equipment is appropriate.
Off-leash access is never automatically guaranteed as part of the service.
-
It depends on the individual dog, group and environment.
Dogs may adventure off leash, on a long line or using other agreed-upon equipment based on safety and suitability.
-
Not necessarily—and they don't need to.
Some dogs enjoy active interaction, while others prefer walking, sniffing and exploring alongside their companions.
The goal is an enjoyable group experience, not nonstop play. For a group of dogs, it is best to keep forward motion and movement which is our goal.
-
Potentially, yes.
Spicy Paws is muzzle-positive, and wearing an appropriately fitted muzzle does not automatically disqualify a dog from group adventures.
Suitability is assessed individually.
-
It's intentional.
Spicy Paws prioritizes individual attention, thoughtful compatibility and manageable group dynamics over maximizing the number of dogs on an outing. This is why our prices are higher than potentially other off-leash pack dog walkers. My goal isn’t to have as many dogs as possible in my car to take on a group walk, but be more intentional with the group dynamic.
Kindred Spirits is designed to provide the social benefits of a group adventure while maintaining the more personalized approach that defines Spicy Paws.
