More Than Just a Walk Around the Block

A good walk isn't measured only in kilometres. For some dogs, a successful outing means getting their legs moving and burning off some energy. For others, it's having plenty of time to sniff every interesting patch of grass.

It might mean practicing established cues, exploring a quiet trail, maintaining a comfortable distance from another dog, taking a slower pace for an older pup, or simply having a familiar person show up during a long day.

Happy Wags Walks are tailored to the dog in front of us rather than following the exact same routine for every client.

Your dog's walk is their time.

Why Choose a Private Dog Walk?

Individual Attention

Your dog receives one-on-one care throughout their walk. Without a large pack to manage, we can focus on your dog's pace, body language, environment and individual needs.

A Familiar Routine

We want your dog's care to feel as consistent and familiar as reasonably possible. During onboarding, we'll learn about your dog's usual walking routine, cues, equipment, preferences and any management strategies you've established.

More Space When They Need It

Private walks can be especially helpful for dogs who don't enjoy close interactions with unfamiliar dogs or people. If your dog needs additional space, we can adjust routes, cross the street, change direction or allow triggers to pass rather than forcing unnecessary interactions.

Time to Sniff

Sniffing is part of the adventure. Unless your dog's individual care plan calls for something different, walks can include opportunities to explore, investigate scents and engage with their surroundings instead of focusing solely on distance or speed.

No Large Pack Walks

Happy Wags Walks are private. Your dog won't automatically be added to a large group of unfamiliar dogs simply because they receive walking services.

If you're interested in social adventures and your dog is a suitable candidate, our Kindred Spirits Small Group Adventures are a separate service.

Who Are Private Walks For?

Happy Wags Walks can be a great option for:

  • Dogs who prefer one-on-one attention

  • Reactive or dog-selective dogs

  • Nervous, fearful or sensitive dogs

  • Puppies learning their routines

  • Senior dogs who need a slower pace

  • High-energy dogs who need an extra outlet

  • Dogs who become overwhelmed in large groups

  • Dogs whose guardians work long or unconventional hours

  • Dogs who need a midday bathroom and movement break

  • Multi-dog households where dogs can be safely walked together

  • Dogs who simply enjoy having their walker all to themselves

Your dog doesn't need to have behavioural challenges to benefit from private care. Sometimes one-on-one attention is simply the best fit.

Reactive & Spicy Dogs Welcome

Private dog walking is one of the services Spicy Paws may offer to reactive, nervous, fearful or sensitive dogs. We understand that a good walk for a reactive dog may look different from a traditional neighbourhood stroll.

That could mean choosing quieter routes, creating extra distance, avoiding on-leash greetings, changing direction when necessary, allowing another dog to pass, or adjusting the outing based on how your dog is feeling that day.

We don't measure a successful walk by how many dogs or people your pup interacted with. Sometimes success is simply having a comfortable outing and coming home feeling good.

Muzzles Welcome

Spicy Paws is proudly muzzle-positive.

If your dog wears an appropriately fitted muzzle as part of their established routine or management plan, they are welcome to inquire about private walking services.

A muzzle doesn't automatically mean a dog is dangerous or unsuitable for care.

It can be a responsible safety tool, and we're happy to discuss your dog's routine during your consultation or meet & greet.

Your Dog's Training & Walking Routine Matter

We're not here to reinvent the relationship you've built with your dog.

Before services begin, we'll discuss things such as:

  • Walking equipment

  • Leash handling preferences

  • Established cues

  • Reinforcement and rewards

  • Known triggers

  • Management strategies

  • Greeting preferences

  • Recall where relevant

  • Physical limitations

  • Behavioural considerations

  • Walking pace

  • Favourite routes or environments

If you're working with a professional trainer, you're welcome to share relevant information about your dog's existing plan.

What Happens During a Happy Wags Walk?

Every dog's outing can look a little different.

Depending on the individual dog and agreed-upon care plan, their walk may include:

Neighbourhood Exploring

A walk around familiar streets with plenty of opportunities to move, sniff and check out what's new.

Quiet Trail Time

Where location and scheduling allow, some walks may include quieter outdoor environments suited to the individual dog.

Enrichment & Sniffing

Not every minute of a walk needs to be spent marching forward.

Exploration and sniffing can be an important part of your dog's outing.

Established Training Cues

We can reinforce familiar cues and routines you've already introduced when appropriate.

Bathroom Breaks

For dogs who primarily need a break during the day, the outing can be adjusted around their comfort, routine and exercise needs.

Flexible Scheduling for Real Life

Not everyone works Monday to Friday, nine to five.

Spicy Paws aims to offer flexible scheduling for people working shifts, overnights, weekends, holidays and unconventional schedules.

Most private walks are booked within an estimated arrival window rather than at an exact guaranteed minute.

Scheduling is organized based on factors such as location, travel time and the care needs of pets booked that day.

Time-sensitive visits may be prioritized where appropriate.

If your dog's walk needs to happen within a particular window, let us know when you inquire so we can discuss availability.

What Happens Before the First Walk?

Every new client begins with a complimentary meet & greet.

This gives us a chance to get to know both you and your dog before their first solo walk.

We'll discuss your dog's:

  • Routine

  • Personality

  • Walking habits

  • Equipment

  • Favourite things

  • Triggers

  • Training cues

  • Behaviour around dogs and people

  • Access instructions

  • Care requirements

  • Emergency information

Where appropriate, we may also take a short walk together so we can see your dog's routine firsthand.

For dogs who need more time to become comfortable with someone new, additional introductions or trial visits may be recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are private walks only for reactive dogs?

No.

Happy Wags Private Walks are available for dogs with many different personalities and needs.

Some dogs require private care because they're reactive or nervous, while others simply benefit from individual attention and a walk designed completely around them.

Will my dog be walked with other dogs?

Happy Wags is a private walking service.

Your dog will not automatically be combined with unfamiliar dogs.

Dogs from the same household may be walked together where appropriate and previously agreed upon.

Do you walk reactive dogs?

Yes. Spicy Paws welcomes inquiries for reactive, nervous, fearful and sensitive dogs.

Each dog is considered individually to determine whether we can provide the requested service safely and appropriately.

Can my dog wear a muzzle during walks?

Yes. Spicy Paws is muzzle-positive and welcomes dogs who use appropriately fitted muzzles as part of their established care or management routine.

Will you let my dog greet other dogs?

No. During Spicy Paws walks, dogs are not permitted to greet or interact with unfamiliar dogs while on leash.

On-leash greetings can create additional tension or barrier frustration, and the other dog is an unpredictable variable—we don't know their behaviour, comfort level, health, training or how they may respond to an interaction.

For that reason, I don't believe the potential benefit of a brief greeting outweighs the risk. Instead, I will create space, cross the street, change direction or allow the other dog to pass whenever reasonably possible.

Your dog's walk is about movement, enrichment and enjoying their environment—not meeting every dog we encounter.

Can you walk my dog if I work shifts?

Flexible scheduling is an important part of Spicy Paws.

Depending on availability, walks may be arranged around shift work, long workdays, evenings, weekends and other non-traditional schedules.

Are walks guaranteed at an exact time?

Most walks are scheduled within an estimated arrival window rather than at an exact minute.

This helps accommodate travel between clients, traffic, individual pet needs and time-sensitive care requirements.
