Private Dog Adventure Walks in Halifax & Dartmouth
Mossy Paw Adventures — Their Adventure. Their Pace.
For dogs who were made to wander, sniff, explore and get their paws a little muddy.
Mossy Paw Private Adventures give your dog dedicated one-on-one time away from the everyday neighbourhood walk. We'll head out to explore quieter trails and natural spaces where your dog can move, sniff, decompress and enjoy the outdoors—with the adventure tailored specifically to them.
No large pack to keep up with. No unfamiliar dogs to navigate. Just your dog, their adventure and plenty of things to sniff along the way.
Spicy Paws provides private dog adventures for dogs throughout select areas of Halifax and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
More Than a Longer Dog Walk
Mossy Paw Adventures aren't simply neighbourhood walks with extra minutes added to the clock.
The experience begins when your dog is picked up. We'll leave their usual neighbourhood behind and travel to a trail or natural area selected with their individual needs in mind.
Once we arrive, the goal isn't to cover as many kilometres as possible. It's to give your dog meaningful time outdoors.
That might mean following an interesting scent, wandering through the woods, climbing over roots and rocks, splashing through puddles, practicing familiar cues or simply stopping to take in everything around them.
Some dogs want to move. Some want to sniff. Most want a little of both.
The adventure belongs to them.
Why Choose a Private Adventure?
One Dog. One Adventure.
Your dog receives dedicated attention throughout their outing rather than sharing their walker with a large group of dogs. Dogs from the same household may be able to adventure together where appropriate and agreed upon in advance.
Quieter Places to Explore
Not every dog enjoys busy parks or heavily travelled trails. Spicy Paws intentionally looks for quieter outdoor spaces that provide opportunities to explore while reducing unnecessary encounters with unfamiliar dogs and people.
Locations may vary depending on trail conditions, weather, season, your dog's needs and other factors affecting safety.
No Unfamiliar Dog Greetings
Dogs in Spicy Paws' care are not permitted to greet unfamiliar dogs while on leash or off-leash. An unfamiliar dog introduces a variable we cannot reasonably predict.
Instead, we'll create space, change direction, step aside or otherwise manage encounters whenever reasonably possible.
Your dog's adventure doesn't need to include meeting strangers to be fulfilling.
Freedom Without Requiring Off-Leash Reliability
Not every adventure dog needs to be an off-leash dog.
Long lines can provide additional freedom to sniff and explore while maintaining an appropriate level of management for dogs who aren't suitable for complete off-leash freedom.
Equipment and handling are determined based on the individual dog and agreed upon with their guardian.
Reactive & Sensitive Dogs Welcome
A dog shouldn't have to enjoy large groups to experience the woods.
Private adventures may be particularly well suited to reactive, nervous, sensitive or dog-selective dogs who enjoy exploring but need more control over their environment.
We'll discuss your dog's triggers, handling needs and established management strategies before their first adventure.

The Trail Is Part of the Experience
One of my favourite parts of offering adventure walks is finding places where dogs can simply enjoy being dogs.
Rather than relying solely on busy dog parks or popular off-leash areas, I spend time scouting potential adventure locations. I'm looking at more than whether a trail photographs well.
I consider things such as trail traffic, visibility, accessibility, terrain, potential encounter points, parking, seasonal conditions and whether the environment is appropriate for the dog I'm bringing with me.
No outdoor environment can ever be completely controlled, and we may still encounter people, dogs, wildlife or unexpected conditions.
But thoughtful location selection can help set the adventure up for success.
Off Leash, Long Line or Leash?
The answer depends on the dog.
Off-leash freedom is never assumed simply because you've booked an adventure service.
Before considering off-leash time, we'll discuss your dog's recall, behaviour, environment, established training and overall suitability.
Some dogs may explore using a long line or other agreed-upon equipment instead.
And that's still an adventure.
The goal isn't to remove the leash.
The goal is to give your dog an enriching outdoor experience while making thoughtful decisions about their safety.
Why Does a Private Adventure Cost More Than a Group Dog Walk?
It's a fair question—especially when you may see group dog walking or pack adventure services offered at a lower price.
The biggest difference is the service model.
With a traditional group walk, the cost of the walker's time, transportation and travel can be distributed across several clients because multiple dogs are being transported and exercised together.
A Mossy Paw Private Adventure reserves that time and transportation specifically for your dog or household.
You're not purchasing one spot in a pack. You're booking the adventure.
Dedicated 1:1 Time
Your dog's adventure isn't being divided among several unrelated dogs.
Their pace, comfort, enrichment, handling and environment can remain the focus throughout the outing.
If your dog needs to stop, we stop.
If they need additional space, we create it.
If they're having an amazing time investigating one section of trail, we don't need to hurry them along simply because four other dogs want to go somewhere else.
Individual Transportation
A private adventure involves travel to and from an appropriate adventure location for one client rather than transporting a vehicle full of dogs whose families are sharing that cost.
Transportation requires additional time, fuel, vehicle use and planning beyond the time spent walking on the trail.
Thoughtful Location Selection
Adventure locations aren't selected solely based on whichever trail is closest.
I spend time exploring and scouting potential locations so I can build a collection of environments suitable for different dogs and different needs.
For a spicy dog, the best adventure may be somewhere completely different from the trail I'd choose for an easygoing dog.
More Individualized Management
With one-on-one care, I can make decisions around the dog standing in front of me rather than managing the needs of an entire group.
This can be especially valuable for reactive, nervous, sensitive, dog-selective or easily overwhelmed dogs who may not be appropriate candidates for traditional pack walks.
You're Paying for Exclusivity
Perhaps the simplest way to explain the difference is this:
A group adventure sells your dog a spot on a walk.
A private adventure reserves the experience for your dog.
Neither model is inherently better for every dog.
Group walks can be a wonderful and more economical option for social dogs who genuinely enjoy being part of a compatible pack.
Private adventures serve a different purpose.
They're designed for guardians who value individualized care—or whose dogs need an experience that can't easily be provided while simultaneously managing several other dogs.
That exclusivity naturally makes the cost per dog higher.
For some dogs, the difference is worth it.
For others, our carefully matched Kindred Spirits Small Group Adventures may be the better fit.

Who Might Love a Mossy Paw Adventure?
Private adventures can be a wonderful option for:
Dogs who love hiking and exploring
Reactive dogs
Nervous or sensitive dogs
Dog-selective dogs
Dogs who aren't suited to traditional pack walks
Dogs who need more space from unfamiliar dogs
High-energy dogs looking for a bigger outing
Dogs who thrive with one-on-one attention
Dogs who enjoy sniffing and exploring natural environments
Dogs whose guardians want them to experience more than their usual neighbourhood
Multi-dog households who want to adventure together without unfamiliar dogs
Your dog doesn't have to be "spicy" to have the trail to themselves.
Private care can simply be what you prefer for them.
Adventure Safety
The outdoors comes with variables.
Weather, trail conditions, wildlife, other trail users and unexpected encounters can all affect an adventure.
Plans or locations may therefore be changed when necessary for safety.
Dogs will not be permitted to greet unfamiliar dogs while on leash or off-leash, and additional distance will be created from other trail users when appropriate.
Off-leash privileges are considered individually and are never guaranteed as part of booking the service. When dogs are off-leash, I always carry a slip lead to allow for the ability to quickly leash up when required.
There may also be occasions when weather, trail conditions or other safety concerns mean an adventure needs to be modified.
Adventure is fun.
Coming home safely matters more.
Before Their First Adventure
Every new client begins with a complimentary meet & greet.
Before heading into the woods together, we'll get to know your dog and discuss things such as:
Personality and routine
Walking and hiking experience
Recall
Triggers and behavioural considerations
Comfort around dogs and people
Wildlife responses
Existing training and cues
Walking equipment
Muzzle use, where applicable
Physical limitations
Transportation
Emergency information
Adventure goals
After the initial phone consult, I will typically join you and your dog for a walk together. Allowing for your dog to get used to me within their space and also allowing me to see how walks normally look for you and your dog.
Some dogs—particularly those who need additional time to become comfortable with a new person—may benefit from additional introductions or private on-leash walks before beginning adventure services.
-
Yes.
Mossy Paw Private Adventures are designed around your dog or dogs from your household rather than a group of unfamiliar dogs.
If there is a neighbor within walking distance that is interested in private off-leash adventures and your dogs get along, services can be booked together with both of you saving 15% on your booking!
-
Not at all.
Private adventures are available to dogs with many different personalities.
Some guardians choose them because their dog is reactive or dog-selective. Others simply prefer individualized care or want their dog to have a dedicated adventure.
-
Off-leash suitability is considered individually based on factors such as recall, behaviour, training, environment and safety. If your dog is off-leash trained, I will typically have a long line dragging for our first walk to ensure your dogs recall is reliable with me.
Dogs who aren't appropriate candidates for off-leash exploration can still have a fantastic adventure using a long line or other agreed-upon equipment.
If you have a Tractive or Fi Collar, you can share those with me for comfort of being able to track your dog while we are out on an adventure.
-
Adventure locations can vary.
I seek quieter trails and natural environments throughout the areas I serve and choose locations based on factors such as the individual dog, weather, trail conditions, season, travel and expected trail activity.
I typically avoid public off-leash spaces like Shubie Park or Point Pleasant Park UNLESS owners specifically state their dogs enjoy these spaces.
Specific locations may not always be guaranteed in advance.
-
No.
Dogs in my care are not permitted to greet unfamiliar dogs while on leash or off-leash.
The behaviour and comfort level of an unfamiliar dog cannot be predicted. Whenever reasonably possible, I will create additional space, change direction or allow the other dog to pass rather than introducing an unnecessary variable into your dog's adventure.
-
Private adventures use a different service model.
Instead of several clients sharing the cost of a walker's time, transportation and travel, your booking reserves that time and transportation specifically for your dog or household.
The price reflects the dedicated one-on-one care, travel, individual transportation, trail selection and scouting, individualized handling and flexibility involved in providing a private adventure.
-
Potentially, yes.
If your dogs can be safely and appropriately handled together, we can discuss household adventures during your consultation.
If your dogs friend is within walking distance or on the way to a trail, we can book the adventure together with you both saving 15% on the booking.
-
Yes.
Spicy Paws is muzzle-positive. Dogs who wear appropriately fitted muzzles are welcome to inquire about adventure services.
-
Outdoor adventures are affected by weather and trail conditions.
Plans may be adjusted, relocated, modified or rescheduled when conditions create a safety concern. Your dog's wellbeing will take priority over completing a particular trail or activity.
